DC Fan Options

Tachometer Output Signal: Optional tachometer output alarm signal can be used to monitor fan performance. The signal is a 2 pulse per revolution square wave output. Different signal output voltages may be available including:

  • - Open collector
  • - TTL Compatible (5vdc)
  • - Source Voltage Output (12vdc fan = 12vdc alarm)

Locked Rotor Alarm Signal: Optional locked rotor alarm signal can be used to monitor fan rotation. The signal is low during normal fan rotation. The signal switches to high when the impeller is locked. Different signal output voltages may be available including:

  • - Open Collector
  • - TTL Compatible (5vdc)
  • - Half of Source Voltage Output (12vdc fan = 6vdc alarm)

Thermistor Speed Control: Optional thermal speed control by thermistor. At 25 degrees C or less, the fan will operate at approximately half speed. At 35 degrees C or greater, the fan will operate at full speed. Between 25 and 35 degrees C, the fan speed will automatically adjust based on the ambient temperature. There are 2 thermistor location options:

  • Hub Mount – Thermistor is mounted on the fan hub. With this configuration, the fan senses the temperature of the air as it flows through the fan and adjusts the speed accordingly.
  • Remote Mount – Thermistor is mounted on the end of 12” lead wires. The thermistor can be placed in a location away from the fan to sense the ambient temperature and adjust the fan speed accordingly.

PWM Speed Control: This option allows for speed adjustment of the fan in the customer application via a customer supplied PWM signal into the fan through a separate input wire. The PWM frequency should be 25kHz +/- 5kHz, and the voltage should be 0.5vdc ~ 5vdc.

Environmental Coatings: Many Mechatronics DC axial models are available with multiple environmental coating options ranging from a light film to full encapsulation. Environmental options are:

  • Conformal Coating – Fan motor and PCB are dipped into conformal coating solution prior to assembly into the fan frame. Conformal Coating is designed for light moisture exposure such as condensation.
  • Enhanced Conformal Coating – Fan motor and PCB are dipped into conformal coating solution. After solution has cured, a secondary coating of silicone is added over PCB components. Enhanced conformal coating is designed for occasional water splashes.
  • Encapsulated Motor – Fan motor and PCB are over molded with polyamide material. Encapsulation is designed for continued water exposure and has been tested to meet IP57 requirements.

Available options vary by model. Custom options may be available upon request. Please contact Mechatronics for details.

Brushless AC Axial Fan and Impeller Options

Dual Voltage: Many Mechatronics AC axial fans and impellers are available in a 115/230v dual voltage package. These models are manufactured for either 115vac or 230vac operation. Each fan includes 4 unique colored lead wires. Fans can be hooked up for 115v or 230v by following the wiring diagram included on each fan.

Environmental Protection: Mechatronics AC axial fans are available with optional environmental protection ranging from light coating to full encapsulation. Available options vary by model.

  • Conformal Coating – fan motor windings are treated with a thin coating prior to installation into the fan frame. Conformal coating is designed for light moisture exposure such as condensation.
  • Encapsulated Motor – Fan motor windings are sealed with potting material to prevent water and dust ingress. Encapsulation is designed for direct water exposure and has been tested to meet IP55 requirements.
  • Encapsulation + Salt Fog Protection – Fan motor windings are sealed with potting material to prevent water and dust ingress. Supplemental coating is added over all exposed areas of fan motor to prevent corrosion from salt exposure.

Multiple Speed: Mechatronics AC axial fans and impellers are available with 2 speed options in the same unit. Each model is supplied with 3 lead wires. Black and blue wires are used for low speed operation. Black and brown wires are used for high speed operation.

DC Alarm Output: Some Mechatronics AC fans are available with a DC alarm signal. The available alarm types are:

  • Tachometer output – Signal delivers 1 pulse per revolution square wave output open collector signal that can be used to monitor fan performance. Customer must supply external DC power to drive the DC alarm circuit.
  • Locked rotor output – Signal delivers low voltage during normal fan operation. Signal changes to high voltage if fan impeller drops below predetermined RPM level or stops. Customer must supply external DC power to drive the DC alarm circuit.

Not all options are available in all models. Please contact Mechatronics for available options for a particular model.

AC Motorized Impeller Options

Mechatronics offers the standard motorized impeller package as well as a unique configuration which combines the impeller and inlet ring in one complete package. The integrated inlet ring doubles as a mounting plate.

Standard motorized impeller integration requires an inlet ring to block the exhaust air from re-entering the air intake. For optimal performance, the inlet ring must be mounted to an adjacent surface aligning it with the impeller intake.

Mechatronics integrated inlet ring option eliminates the need for an additional adjacent surface for an inlet ring. Simply mount the device and power it up. This simplifies integration as well as reduces your assembly labor time.
